Buhari: Nigerians overly impressed by materialism

Former President Muhammadu Buhari reflected on his unsuccessful presidential bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011, attributing the challenges to Nigerians’ strong inclination toward materialism. In a recent interview on Nigeria Television Authority, Buhari emphasized the country’s fascination with wealth, opulent houses, and extravagant lifestyles.

He expressed the difficulty he faced in garnering support, stating that material success often overshadowed the importance of addressing the needs of the less privileged.

Recalling his journey to the presidency, Buhari highlighted the struggle he encountered as Nigerians appeared more captivated by material prosperity than by initiatives aimed at uplifting the less privileged. Despite eventually securing the presidency in 2015, he acknowledged that his tenure fell short of fully realizing his objectives for the country.
