Abiodun: My predecessor opposed my Ogun governorship

During a speech at his 64th Birthday and 5th Year Thanksgiving Service at the Ogun State Government House Chapel, Oke-Igbein, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun reflected on his challenging journey to office. Without naming anyone, he mentioned that the person in power at the time campaigned for a candidate from another party, despite being in the same party as him.

Abiodun described the process of his emergence as governor as highly unusual and fraught with difficulties. “My predecessor, who was in the same party, fought against me and supported another candidate from a different party,” he said. “I often questioned why I faced such adversity, but I came to understand that it was because God wanted to take the glory for my victory.”

Reflecting on his five years in office, Abiodun noted the challenges and turbulence but emphasized that his faith in God brought him through. “These years have been some of the most beautiful experiences of my life, despite the challenges and rancor. The most important thing is that in all of this, God has given us victory.”

The governor highlighted his administration’s efforts to reshape Ogun State’s economy, including plans to make Ogun an oil-producing state. He announced that the Ministry of Petroleum Resources would soon begin oil exploration in the state. “Just on Friday, the leadership of the Ministry of Petroleum, along with the chairman of Shell, announced that they would soon start drilling oil in Ogun State,” he said.

Abiodun also responded to criticism from Ladi Adebutu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the last general election, regarding the 8-kilometer Sagamu-Iperu road project. Adebutu had disparaged the project, but Abiodun dismissed the remarks, pointing out the extensive roadwork completed by his administration, totaling over 600 kilometers across Ogun State.

He criticized Adebutu’s inability to maintain the road near his own family’s house despite their wealth. “I read that someone was embarrassed that I commissioned an 8-kilometer road while another governor commissioned a 77-kilometer road. I have learned not to respond to such ignorant remarks,” Abiodun said.

Governor Abiodun assured that his administration would continue to improve the state’s infrastructure to enhance the well-being of its residents.
