The Ogun State Government has announced that campsites run by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, and Deeper Christian Life Bible Ministry are available to those affected by the coastal floods in the state.
The State Commissioner of Environment, Mr. Oladimeji Oresanya, advised willing residents to contact the state’s emergency response teams and the National Emergency Management Agency for assistance in relocating. Over 100 landlords have already fled their homes due to the floods caused by rising sea levels, rainfall, and the release of water from the Oyan dam.
One landlord, Mr. Paschal Uchendu, shared the severity of the situation, expressing that this flood surpasses that of 2019, and has even blocked off a section of Warewa Road. The floods have impacted Riverview Estate significantly, with many homeowners forced to leave. Mr. Abayomi Akinde, a landlord and Chairman of the Riverview Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association, described the devastating effects, emphasizing unfulfilled promises from both former President Goodluck Jonathan and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, regarding infrastructure improvements.
In response, Commissioner Oresanya urged residents to either evacuate or elevate their homes, and assured that church hostels, provided by organizations like RCCG and MFM, are open for temporary shelter. The state’s emergency management agency, along with NEMA, is offering relief support. Additionally, he clarified that the flooding is not solely attributed to the Oyan dam release.
Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, addressed concerns of residents along the Ogun-Osun river bank, assuring the state’s readiness to manage any potential issues arising from the increased water flow into Lagos. He strongly advised homeowners in these areas to relocate to higher ground promptly.
