In a widely circulated video on social media, a man is seen holding a bag of rice labeled ‘Ogun State Palliative Programme,’ expressing dissatisfaction with the meager amount of rice allocated for the 147 households in Shokeye Estate.
The man, who identifies himself as the chairman of Shokeye CDA, emphasized that the estate is not in dire need and the residents are not in a position of desperation. He stated, “We are not hungry; we are not beggars. So we don’t need your rice as palliative. This is not even up to one-eighth of a bag of rice.”
This incident occurred approximately a month after the Federal Government allocated N5 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for palliatives following the removal of fuel subsidy. This fund was intended to enable states to procure food items for distribution to the less privileged within their jurisdictions.
The man expressed his disappointment in the action of Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, viewing it as an affront to both himself and the entire estate. He voiced his confusion about how to distribute the meager supply of rice among the 147 households in Shokeye Estate.
Conclusively, he conveyed a strong message, stating, “We don’t need this rice; if you want to give us palliatives, don’t insult us. This is an insult. Shokeye Estate refuses to be insulted.”
