Due to unpaid three months’ salary, employees at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic in Abeokuta (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, have called an indefinite strike.
OgunWatch reports that the polytechnic’s operations were halted on Thursday when the indefinite strike went into force.
The strike was called after the congresses of the three staff unions: the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), and Non Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).
The ASUP Chairman, Tomisi Adegunle, the SSANIP Chairman, Dada Olalekan, and the Secretary, Tunde Abiodun, on Thursday led members of other unions in speaking to reporters at the polytechnic’s entrance.
While criticizing the institution’s administration for their inadequate treatment of it members’ wellbeing, they bemoaned what they called the Management’s financial irresponsibility and non-challant attitude towards staff welfare, to name just a few, and demanded acceptance of the Conversion & Upgrading Exercise to eligible members of staff.
They also requested for an immediate payment of their salaries and benefits from July 20, 2023, through the present, as well as the release of the 2019 appointments and 2020 promotions for staff members, as well as the payment of their pensions and the remittance of union deductions for more than forty-five (45) months to the proper quarters.
OgunWatch reports that the unions claimed to have written a number of letters to management outlining the need to put employees’ welfare first, but management allegedly paid little attention to their pleas.
The ASUP Chairman maintained that the striking workers would return to work only when their demands were granted.
“We want all our salaries paid, all the remuneration should be paid. Of course, we are afraid of our future. Our deductions have not been paid.
“Some workers are going to retire in the next few months and what are they going to go home with.”
