In an effort to reach Ogun State’s rural residents the pharmaceutical society of Nigeria (PSN) have taken a medical outreach to traders in Sapon market Abeokuta.
The medical outreach which began at 9am on Monday as part of activities honoring the World Pharmacy Day had over 300 beneficiaries.
Drugs for common illnesses were distributed, along with free HIV tests, counselling, talks on HIV awareness, blood sugar level checks, malaria, hepatitis tests among others.
Otunba Adewale, chairman of PSN Ogun state chapter, highlighted to OgunWatch at the outreach that these traders need to understand the value of good health, and since they are constantly busy, they decided to come to their market place.
“Like every year, September 25 been chosen as World Pharmacy Day worldwide and we are celebrating it today. Our team for this year is pharmacist strengthen health system as we are doing here is being done all over Nigeria and all over the world. It takes pharmacists to interact with our community and let them let them know the importance of pharmacy and we pharmacists are here to render our help when needed.
“ Most don’t come to us when they need drugs. We want them to know the relevance to be able to come to us and we are all over and we will be. We are here to render our service .
“ We have been here since 9:00 AM this morning and we’ve been consulting, doing the vital signs, HIV test, blood sugar, blood pressure and a little bit of consultation. Once we see any serious illness , we would refer them to the hospitals for further checkup.
The Iyalaje of the market, Florence Quadri, thanked the organizers for the unusual opportunity of visiting t them at their place of business.
“ This medical check up is very, very important because some people we see came to the market yesterday are today gone. Why? Because they don’t know their medical status and whatever challenges they have
“ So I want to thank the government for assisting us because most of us don’t know that we should go for checkup because of the type of job we are doing. We concerned about making money but thank God that you are here.
“ We have to left what we are doing to come and do the check up. So a very big thank you to the federal government, very big thank you to the state government and very big thank you to all the pharmacists that are on ground .
