In response to a planned protest by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Chapter, Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) has reinforced security measures at its main gate.
The protest, scheduled for today, stems from allegations of school management interference in the Student Union’s affairs.
OOU’s administration declared September 18, 2023, a work-free day due to the impending NANS protest.
In a recent phone call with the Chairman of NANS, Ogun State Chapter, it was confirmed that the demonstration aims to protest the perceived intrusion of the school management in the Student Union’s activities.
Presently, the university’s main gate is heavily guarded to prevent any untoward incidents. The students’ discontent with the management’s recent actions has been simmering for some time.
Their primary grievance revolves around the formation of an electoral committee by the vice-chancellor, which they argue constitutes an imposition.
The protesting students contend that the committee’s composition flagrantly violates the university’s constitution. They have vocally discouraged aspiring candidates from obtaining forms from this “illegal committee.” This stance underscores their concerns about the fairness and integrity of the upcoming elections.
Furthermore, the students emphasize that the university’s management has persistently undermined the collective will of the student body and displayed a disregard for established constitutional procedures in student governance.
